Back from Vacation!

I’m back to boot camp after going on a cruise with my mother and sisters.

Of course, I had a wonderful, relaxing vacation. After what everyone said about the food on a cruise, I was surprised…the food was unbearable!  I  am so glad to be back!

My welcome back workout was not as bad as I thought it was going to bed and Chris definitely worked us. I had a few muscles screaming at me but I felt great later.

I accomplished my first goal of looking better in my bathing suit in time for the cruise.  My next goal is getting back to my ideal weight. I have no other vacation plans ahead of me, my only drive is getting back into life.

Nine Inches in Six Weeks!

Erin was in our High Intensity Training program that we offered this summer at Cuddy Park.  Here are her great results!

Book Signing at The Dome

Last night, we held a book-signing event at The Alaska Dome.  Thank you to everyone who came out for it.  We didn’t have any paparazzi, so our pics are from my iPhone.

More Great News for Faye!

If you’ve been following our blog and success stories, you’ve seen frequent appearances by one of our long-term boot campers, Faye Sullivan.  Faye has had some amazing success with our program, completely changing her health and her lifestyle, along with her husband Joe.  Here’s Faye’s latest good news.  She got her blood work done at her annual check-up and here’s what she sent us:

9/22/2010 8/3/2011
Triglycerides 98 57
Glucose 127 92
HDL 35 56
LDL 84 57
Cholesterol 139 123

In just under a year, Faye has completely changed her numbers. She has gone from technically diabetic (glucose at 127) to normal (glucose at 92). She has almost completely reversed her HDL/LDL ratio and now has a great lipid profile. And, she reduced her triclycerides by 31 points…FANTASTIC!  She is continuing to make her way towards her goal of losing an additional 40 pounds (she has already lost over 50 pounds!) and living a healthier lifestyle.  You go girl!  This is what we are all about.

The Power of Friends and Fitness

Hello again, my dedicated readers! Something we’ve touched on before is how exercise can make you feel better not just physically, but emotionally as well. Today’s topic: the benefits of exercise for mental health.

Not too long ago I read an article entitled “What Makes Us Happy? The article reviews a study of a group of men that began before WWII and only recently concluded. The idea of the study was simple: to see what factors mattered most in making a man happy and healthy in old age.

The study found the following seven important factors: Employing mature adaptations, education, stable marriage, not smoking, not abusing alcohol, some exercise, and healthy weight.  Dr. Vaillant calls these variables “Defenses.”

Of these exercise is one of the seven most important things you can do to protect your physical and mental health into old age and directly contributes to another (healthy weight).

Beyond these seven defenses the next most important factor … the power of relationships.

“It is social aptitude,” he writes, “not intellectual brilliance or parental social class, that leads to successful aging.” Warm connections are necessary—and if not found in a mother or father, they can come from siblings, uncles, friends, mentors. The men’s relationships at age 47, he found, predicted late-life adjustment better than any other variable, except defenses. Good sibling relationships seem especially powerful: 93 percent of the men who were thriving at age 65 had been close to a brother or sister when younger.

This is actually worth noticing and pointing out, because it illustrates another way that exercise can help your mental and physical health: through building relationships and friendships with other positive people.

At AlaskaFit bootcamps exercise is a social experience where you meet and interact with other people, while getting a butt-kickin’ workout.  Many of our campers have made new friends there, and good ones at that.  So do yourself a favor and give your physical and mental health a double kickstart in the right direction: workout with friends.

Two More T-Shirts Earned!

Congratulations to Faye & Joe Sullivan!!

They are our latest one-year Boot Campers, sporting their exclusive 1-year AlaskaFit Boot Camp T-Shirt.  You can’t buy this, it has to be earned and wow have they  earned it.

Click here to see Joe when he first joined us last summer.

Click here to see Faye this fall when she was halfway through her year.

Here’s where they are today:  Faye is down 52 pounds, 48 inches and 4 dress sizes!!!  She’s focused on dropping another 40 pounds and is fully committed to achieving her goal.  Joe has dropped 8 points on his body fat percentage…that’s 20%…and he’s put on over 10 pounds of muscle!  His flexibility has greatly improved and he likes to say he can now reach body parts he hasn’t been able to in years.

With Joe’s constant nutrition support (have you seen his recipe re-dos?) and their commitment to another year of boot camp, they’ll be reaching their goals, looking and feeling great!!

Wendi Gets Nutrition On Track

Here I am, two months into personal training and the results were not what I had been hoping for.  I’ve been feeling stronger and clothes have been fitting better, but the body-fat changes I was hoping for weren’t happening.  In fact, I’ve been losing the muscle mass I’ve been working so hard to get.  Why suffer through Chris’ fun but brutal workouts only to lose muscle?

I think I had fallen in to the mindset that know that I’m working out more I don’t have to pay too much attention to what I’m eating and drinking.  Chris and Ginny both warned me that I needed to make some changes to what I was eating, but I thought, “Right, I know what I’m doing.”  Turns out, I had no idea what I was doing!

Ginny suggested I come in and go through the Resting Metabolic Rate testing and get on the AlaskaFit KickStart Nutrition plan (they have this amazing machine that actually told me exactly how many calories I should be eating and then gave me a meal plan that tells me what and when to eat AND a shopping list so I can just go buy what I need…super-easy!)

So, with Ginny’s help I have made some changes in my nutrition and it’s amazing the difference I’m feeling in just one week!  I’m eating breakfast for the first time in 15 years!  It was a hard adjustement but it’s really working.  I have more energy all day long for work and for my work outs.  I have started upping my cardio between personal training sessions and am now able to run 3 miles at time!  Huge progress for me.

The nutrition component AlaskaFit offers is really comprehensive and easy to follow.  I’m loving it!!  Thanks AlaskaFit!

Congratulations Colena!

“Thank you AlaskaFit for helping me look amazing on my wedding day!

                                                                 –Colena Mintle Peyton

Colena joined us in May last year to get ready for her wedding in Hawaii.  Bathing suits AND wedding dress?  Check out how great she looks.

Will you look this good on your wedding day?  Join us at Boot Camp and the answer is YES!

Lost: 6 Inches and 4.5 Pounds!

I am feeling great! I have more energy and am eating the right foods.

I know I wouldn’t workout on my own so I am really grateful for boot camp and the friends that I have made.  I like being with a group of people that want to get their energy and life back.

I am doing push-ups which I never thought I would do. I am working to do push-ups on my toes instead of my knees…and the same goes for my side planks.

I feel great when I run and I seem to have more energy.

Here’s the best part: I weighed in and got remeasured last week.  I’ve lost 4.5 lbs and 6 inches!  I can’t wait to go on my cruise now!  I can actually see the results in my face and in the way my clothes are fitting me.
