Helping Kids, Changing Your Life!

Anchorage, AK-   On Thursday, January 19, 2012 three leading Anchorage health,
fitness and personal-care professionals will reveal the secrets of how you will,
“Make 2012 Your Healthiest and Best Year Ever,” at a community awareness and
fundraising event for Hospice of Anchorage’s Camp Erin.

“The purpose of this event is to kick-off 2012 by teaching Anchorage residents
proven strategies for achieving their New Year’s Resolutions for health and
fitness and raising money for a great charity that I just love,” explains AlaskaFit
owner and best-selling author, Ginny Grupp.

“Most people set health and fitness goals for the New Year, jump in with both feet
and drown in a matter of days, never coming close to reaching their health and
fitness goals.   At this show, we will reveal how anyone with the desire can make
2012 the year they finally get it together and achieve their weight-loss and fitness
goals,” says Grupp.  “The line-up of health, fitness, nutrition and stress-
management experts I’ve assembled is formidable.  We’re all very confident we
can have a real impact on the health of our community – and raise money for a
great cause at the same time.  We intentionally chose the name of the event
because of its big promise.  Anchorage residents have supported our businesses
over the years, and now we want to give back by showing them how to make 2012
their best year yet,” explains Grupp.

Linnea Cummings of Alaska Dinner Factory and Theresa Bovey, of Trinion Quality
Care Services will also share their secrets  to easy meal prep and balancing your life.

The “Make 2012 Your Healthiest and Best Year Ever” show and fundraising event for
Camp Erin will begin at 7 p.m. at AlaskaFit’s new location at 6251 Tuttle Place,
Suite 102.  All Anchorage residents over 15 years of age are invited. There is no
cost to attend other than a small $10 donation to Camp Erin at the door.

Additional information about the event is available at www.YourBestYearAK.com.

Working Out The Core Is Essential, But a Whole Body Routine Is Critical

All too often, we try to target our workouts to take care of problem spots. Flabby thighs, hanging arms (a.k.a. bat wings), muffin tops and other very specific areas get the bulk of our exercise attention while the core is overlooked. The truth is we need to work our whole body if we want to get real results. Targeting is fine, but it won’t get the job done on its own.

The core – the back and stomach muscles – are essential to include in regular workout routines for a number of reasons. The fact is that all body movement comes from the core. If your stomach and back muscles aren’t properly strengthened and toned, your entire system will suffer.

Try lifting heavy weights to tone those flabby arms, for example, and your back muscles just might protest in a very big way. If this happens, you could suffer an injury that just might sideline your weight loss and exercise efforts for a time.

So, how can you get the workout you really need?

The key to enjoying weight loss and body strengthening success is to go for a whole body workout. While focusing on the core is critical, ideally you do want to include the entire body. To make sure this happens, develop a workout plan that involves all major muscle groups. Be sure to blend both cardiovascular and strength training together, too.

If you’re unsure of how to develop a true full body workout routine, give us a call at 783-1241 and we can help you. Every Boot Camp workout we do is a total-body workout.  And our trainers can help you by:

Tailoring a program to suit your needs – Not everyone can follow exactly the same workout routine. What works for your best friend, for example, might actually be too rigorous for you. Consulting with one of our trainers will result in a routine that takes your strengths and weaknesses into account. Your tailored routine will also be designed to offer the right level of challenge without taxing your body too much.

Making sure you avoid injury – Beginners often strive too hard to see results. Jumping into a 7-day-per-week workout routine can and often does, lead to injuries. At the very least, a workout that is too hard can zap motivation very quickly. When you involve the pros, you’ll end up with a plan that’s been developed to help you reach personal goals while motivating you to succeed.

Offering moral support – Our coaches are here to help you reach your goals. They do this not only by offering their expertise, but also by cheering you on along the way.

A body-part-targeted workout won’t provide the overall results you’re after. If you want to see real changes in your body, you need to focus on the whole body.

Why we Recommend Only One Supplement

Many of you who have known me and been around AlaskaFit for a while know that the only supplements that I have ever recommended are Shaklee supplements.  I’ve been in the fitness business since I was about 12 years old and never bought into supplement-company claims (even though I briefly worked for a supplement company in my early 20s), let’s just say I was not convinced that there was any real benefit to supplementing.

Dr. Stephen Chaney is also one of my favorite experts in the area of health and nutrition.  Here’s what he says about Shaklee supplements.

“A number of you have contacted me requesting a clear
explanation of the Shaklee Difference.

“I understand your frustration. I have looked at the
literature and web sites of many of Shaklee’s
competitors.

“Most of Shaklee’s competitors excel in marketing.
Their web sites and literature tell compelling stories.
Every company claims to have the highest quality
standards and products backed by outstanding science.

“They all claim to be the best.

“So what is it that truly distinguishes Shaklee from
the rest?

“In my opinion there are five things that make Shaklee
stand out from the crowd.

“#1) Integrity: To me integrity means three things:

- No hype or false claims. One reason why other
companies are able to tell such compelling stories is
that they feel free to make claims that they cannot
back up with clinical studies (more about that next
week).

Shaklee does not resort to hype or false claims in
promoting their products. Shaklee has never been asked
by the FTC or FDA to retract any of their product
claims – something that cannot be said for many of
their competitors.

- No testimonials. One reason why other company’s web
sites are so compelling is the testimonials.

In evaluating testimonials you need to understand that
the placebo effect is close to 50% for things like pain
relief, energy and feeling of well being.

That’s why I always ignore testimonials unless they are
backed by sound science.

- No paid endorsements. Endorsements are commodities.
They are bought and sold.

That’s why I always ignore endorsements by doctors and
professional athletes.

So what is the bottom line for you as a consumer?

My recommendation is to pay very little attention to
testimonials and endorsements.

And, of course, remember those venerable words of
wisdom “If it sounds to good to be true, it probably
isn’t”. Don’t get caught up in the hype. Just use your
common sense.

“#2) The Golden Rule. I know that sounds kind of hokey,
but by that I mean:

- Shaklee’s commitment to only make products of proven
benefit.

Some of you may remember earlier fads concerning
chromium picolinate and colloidal minerals. The current
fads seem to be magic water and exotic juices.

Shaklee has looked at all of those products. They could
have made lots of money from marketing those kinds of
products, but there was no good evidence that they
actually worked – that they provided a real benefit to
people using them. So Shaklee chose not to make those
products.

- Shaklee’s commitment to only make products that will
do no harm.

“Some of you may remember those weight loss products
containing ephedra (ma huang) from a few years ago.

“Shaklee evaluated ephedra for their weight loss
products. It is effective at increasing metabolic
rate, but it also causes arrhythmia – it kills people.

“That was abundantly clear from the scientific
literature at that time. Of course, Shaklee chose to
not use ephedra in their weight loss products. But many
of their competitors used it – until enough people died
that the FDA stepped in and banned ephedra.

- Shaklee’s commitment to make their products as
natural as possible. We are exposed to too many toxic
chemicals in the food we eat, the water we drink and
the air we breathe. Because of that I prefer to avoid
artificial ingredients in the supplements that I take.

“I have seen the list of artificial ingredients that
Shaklee will not use. It’s the size of a small
telephone book.

“And that list includes sucralose. While many experts
will assure you that sucralose is safe, other experts
aren’t so sure.

“My rule of thumb is to not knowingly consume any
artificial ingredient unless it has been in the food
supply for at least 20 years and is still considered
safe.

“If you think about it, we have been assured by the
‘experts’ that other artificial ingredients were safe
only to have the FDA announce years latter “Oops – we
were wrong”

“I prefer to avoid the ‘Oops’ factor.

“Shaklee’s list of ingredients that they will never use
also includes GMO ingredients. Again, this is a
controversial area, but I believe that there are too
many unresolved environmental and health concerns
around GMO foods.

“So what is the bottom line for you as a consumer?

“It is difficult for the layperson to evaluate the
efficacy and safety of an ingredient or product, but
you can become a discerning label reader.

“I would recommend avoiding supplements containing
artificial colors, preservatives and sweeteners
(including sucralose).

“And for food products (shakes, bars and gels) I would
also recommend avoiding them unless the label
specifically states that they use non GMO ingredients.

“Coming Next Week: The Shaklee Difference in product
quality, clinical studies and, of course, the Landmark
study.

Your Best Body Challenge October 2011 Winners!

Congratulations Judy Turner, our Grand Prize Winner.

She won over $2,500 in prizes:

6 months of AlaskaFit Boot Camp ($1.314)
(3) 90-minute massages from Karie Tieszen, LMT ($285)
$200 gift certificate to Blush Boutique
$500 studio credit from LaVie Imagery
$100 gift certificate from Pure Skin Care Boutique
$100 gift certificate from Acai Alaska

Judy had some amazing results is just 6 weeks:

Pounds lost: 12
Inches lost: 16
Body fat percent change: 3.2%

Judy came to us feeling “fat and weak.”  She had lost direction in her life.  She was eating at restaurants (mostly fast food) and not exercising at all.  In the 6 weeks she spent with us, she started eating at home and attending boot camp regularly.  Even with the improvements she was making, she still felt like she was holding the entire group back because she was “the weakest link.” She was continually inspired by the achievements of the other women in the group and was completely shocked when I announced her as the winner of the contest! She is back in control of her life and the changes she made in the past 6 weeks are long-term ones that she can be proud of.

Watch Judy’s winning moment below.

Motivation – It Will Run Out, But There’s a Solution!

You’ve joined a gym and you’re all set to drop that 20 pounds you’ve promised yourself you’d lose for years. Your motivation is high and you know you can do it!

That is fantastic news, but it’s time to temper your enthusiasm with a bit of reality. The fact is your motivation is very high right now and that’s a good thing. Your motivation, however, may not last forever. When you’re 10 pounds in and that last ten pounds won’t seem to go away, you need a plan in place to keep yourself going.

So, how can you bolster your motivation and make sure it stays on course? There are a few fairly simple tricks that can help you retain your desire to achieve even when the going gets tough. Try these things to help yourself stay on track:

Don’t work out alone – When you work out alone, it’s all too easy to quit in the last 10 minutes. It’s also a whole lot easier to skip a day here and there. You need a way to hold yourself accountable to overcome those dips in motivation that are very likely to occur. Instead of going it alone, workout with a friend. Hire a trainer to keep you accountable. Join a Boot Camp class. Just do something that involves another human being that can help hold your feet to the fire if and when the urge to quit strikes.

Keep a journal – The journey to changing your lifestyle can be long and arduous. It is often fraught with ups and downs, too. Write down everything that happens in a journal. Record your successes and complain about your struggles in writing. Releasing your doubts can help you gain focus and help you to remember why you started this process to begin with. Recording your successes can give you the strength to draw on when you need it the most.

Set goals – Saying you want to lose 100 pounds is great, but it’s a pretty big number to shoot for. While it’s a great idea to have an end goal, try setting smaller ones along the way. Use milestone goals to help keep yourself going. Give yourself rewards when you attain these milestones, too. Little things like a massage or a day at the salon for losing five or 10 pounds can motivate you to keep reaching for loftier goals.

Changing your lifestyle is a journey that calls for motivation. Keep yours high by enlisting some help. Our coaches and personal trainers can help you get on track and stay that way.
