I’ve been involved in fitness my entire life.  I got my start back in 1982, when I boot-legged an audio copy of  The Jane Fonda Workout.  I had so much fun with it that I did it 3 times a day.  I was completely hooked on health and fitness.  It carried through with me to college, but at that time I didn’t know I could make it a career.  So, I went into corporate America and then left it all behind in 1999 to travel the world.  After a few years with my backpack, I landed in Alaska, fell in love with the place and decided to stay and pursue health and fitness as a full-time career.  I got my ACE Personal Trainer Certification in 2003, went on to complete an MS in Exercise Science and Health Promotion in 2007, and began working on expanding AlaskaFit to help more people achieve her health and fitness goals.

Jade Hartley – Nutrition Coach

AlaskaFit Nutrition Coach Jade Hartley

I was born and raised, here in Anchorage, Alaska. I have struggled with my weight my whole life.  I guess I became aware of my weight problem when I was about 8 years old.  My parents never had any weight problems, and my younger sister didn’t struggle with her weight either. I became very isolated, I felt like an outsider within my own family.  No one knew what I was going through. My mom would try her hardest to help me, but that just isolated me even more. I didn’t want the attention because it seemed to be negative and didn’t help my self-esteem.  When I was 14 years old I found out about the Atkins diet and jumped on the opportunity to lose weight fast. I lost 45lbs in about 3 months but was able to keep it off for less than a year. Over the next 5 years I gained the 45lbs back plus another 60 lbs. on top of that. During those five years of weight gain I tried to go back on the Atkins several times, every time I would lose 20lbs. and gain back 30lbs. It never worked again.

Finally, I researched how to lose weight, read countless books and decided to listen to what everyone has said from the start “eat right and exercise.” I changed my eating habits, kept a food journal, did a yoga video at home and with in a year I managed to lose 100 lbs! That was in 2010.  I continue working on becoming healthier, and creating healthy habits. Every day is a struggle and every day I have to make choices. The key is knowing that I am in control of my weight. Now, I help people understand how to lose weight, and lose weight the right way. I am the support person I never had. I truly know what it is like to be obese, and not have the slightest idea of how to start losing  weight.  I have overcome my weight and now I get the opportunity to help you!
